recto: tree on the left, on the right landscape with city on the top of a rocky hill, with ascending road; pilgrim or shepherd climbing the path. The city shows church, houses and towers. On the background on the right are mountains. Flying birds. Seems a landscape before the realization of the sky and the detailing of the ground. The landscape portrayed on the top of the hill is remarkably similar to that in the background of cat. 64, included in the album of cardinal Carpegna.
Verso: Madonna of the Rosary and two saints, Dominic and Catherine. There are several distinctive features that may assist in identifying the original artwork from which this drawing was copied. The Virgin is shown seated on clouds, holding the Christ Child, who playfully interacts with a rosary chain that extends downwards and almost ends in the praying hands of Saint Catherine. Meanwhile, the Virgin leans forward to hand a crown to Saint Dominic. The attributes of the saints are clearly emphasized, as is the dynamic torsion of the Virgin’s upper body. This is not a preparatory study, but rather a copy after an existing composition. Given the widespread popularity of this mystical group, however, I have not yet been able to identify a specific source.
Rather unusual in the repertoire of Jacovacci. His inventory shows a small number of religious subjects.
The drawing was part of the Pacetti collection (Pacetti Volume XXII).
